The holiday season has always been a double-edged sword for me. I love all that it represents…family, love and the spirit of giving. I always enjoy wrapping gifts, decorating my apartment, volunteering and writing Christmas cards. And as a movie lover, I love all the Christmas movies…everything from Elf to classics like Miracle on 34th Street and Christmas in Connecticut.
However, if you’re single during the holidays, you invariably end up feeling like something is missing. All the images of happy couples and “perfect” families celebrating the holidays take a toll. This year, I’m doing my best to focus on the joy of the season and be grateful for all the things that I do have in my life.
I’m grateful for Orelia, my health, awesome parents, amazing friends, my beautiful San Francisco apartment and even the freedom of being single. I want to have scrambled eggs and biscuits for dinner? I can do it without checking in with anyone else. I want to dance around my kitchen singing Christmas in New Orleans with a terrible Louis Armstrong accent? Done. No one is going to judge me. (Except maybe Orelia. She did look at me funny when I did that. Oh well.)
