Paris Underground

Halloween may be over, but the haunting beauty of the Catacombs will stay with me for a long time.  The limestone quarries date back centuries when builders used the stone to erect Notre Dame.  Today, more than 180 miles of tunnels create an intriguing and mysterious maze underneath the City of Light.

The remains of 6 million former Parisians are so artfully arranged that it almost feels like an installation at a modern art museum.  However, there’s nothing faux about it.  I was surprised by the fact that all the skulls look exactly the same.  We all like to think that we’re so unique and special.  Yet underneath, we are all the same.
